My opinion on Jo Malone is similar to the crowd – I don’t think they have the most amazing fragrances. Not because of their quality but mostly because Jo Malone fragrances usually are a very fresh, floral, airy, and citric type of scents. Since those types of fragrances don’t quite identify with my style, I’m not drawn to this brand.
But, boy oh boy, did the Velvet Rose and Oud fragrance hit on a different note for me!
When I heard about the fragrance, I must admit: I was intrigued!
The name intrigued me.
The bottle intrigued me.
And this fragrance was supposed to be one of the most intense fragrances by Jo Malone. So I had to try it! I had to give Jo Malone a second chance.
Thus, here I am to share with you all my thoughts on the Velvet Rose and Oud fragrance.
My thoughts on the bottle
The first thing I noticed was the weight of the cap. It’s quite light and it also feels cheaply made, which is a bit of a turn-off for me. On the other hand, the bottle is simple and nice – but again, it is not my favorite.
When it comes to buying high-end fragrances, we, buyers, are expecting to have an overall experience of luxury – starting from the packaging to the bottle and then, to the scent! At the end of the day, all of the little factors that can make the bottle unique to the scent really matter.
With this one, I feel like Jo Malone missed the mark.
My thoughts on the scent
The Velvet Rose and Oud is described as an Oriental Floral fragrance for both men and women with rich and textural top notes of Clove, heart notes of sweet and spicy Damask Rose and base notes of rich, smokey Oud. It was released in 2012 and the nose behind the fragrance is Fabrice Pellegrin.
The first three words that popped in my head when I first smelled this fragrance was: Sophisticated, Elegant and Lavish! I was so surprised by how intense it was – the scent gave me way more than I thought it would! At the same time, it’s a smooth and well-balanced fragrance.
From the start, you definitely pick up the Oud – and it is not a dirty Oud. It’s a very smooth, wearable, smokey Oud. Then, you pick up a mix of dry, spicy rose and an airy, fresh rose scent.
It’s almost like the baby sister of the Oud Bouquet by Lacome – less sweet and slightly powdery on my skin.
Overall, this is such a well-rounded fragrance. She really has got it all together with this one – every note is perfectly blended together.
Who is this fragrance for?
The Velvet Rose and Oud is the perfect fragrance for those who want to get into the Oud, Rose realm. It’s such a great option to start off with because it is so smooth and well balanced.
It is absolutely captivating, classy, elegant and NOT too mature!
